Create an new PORTFOLIO WEBSITE!

An online portfolio allows you to publish and present TWO important aspects of the work you do in the class:

1. Your FINISHED PRODUCT
2. The "BEHIND THE SCENES" effort
  • Pre-Production planning
  • Anecdotes and Reflection on the project

BOTH are important to the assessment of your marks - even if your final product has flaws, the understanding and effort you show in your "Behind the Scenes" material can show the learning that actually did take place - and you get marks for LEARNING as well as DOING.

Websites can be created and published in dozens of different ways (straightforward HTML is one of the best)
We'll be using GoogleSites because it lets you author and publish online VERY easily.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS CAREFULLY!
  • Missing a step may require you to start over again!
  • Don't deviate from the assigned template - changing the theme or colours can "break" certain features we need!

Step One - START A NEW GOOGLESITE

Begin by logging on to your OCDSB Google Documents account. Go to your GMail page.
  1. Click on the APPS grid in the top right corner Googlesites_AppSelect.png
  2. Choose SITES (it should be there somewhere!)
  3. Hit the big red CREATE button choose to create a CLASSIC Google Site (in classic sites)
  4. Click on "BROWSE THE GALLERY for more"

Step Two - CHOOSE A TEMPLATE

TEMPLATES are pre-formatted websites set up by your teacher
  1. Click on the OCDSB category and search for your class code (ie TIJ1o)
  2. Select the template corresponding to YOUR class and teacher
(CAREFUL - there may be more than one template with your course code)
  3. Click the blue SELECT button at the BOTTOM of the page when it appears

Step Three - NAME YOUR SITE

  1. Use your "Last Name First" format with your COURSE and the word "Portfolio"
ie Smith_John_TIJ1O_Portfolio_2017 would be a good name
Do NOT change any of the other options at this point - it's important that your website behaves exactly like the rest of the class websites.
  2. Click the CREATE button at the top of the page to open your new site

Step Four - LOCK DOWN your SHARING OPTIONS

  2. Choose "SHARING and PERMISSIONS" at the bottom of the list
  3. Click the CHANGE button under the "Who Has Access" section

  4. Your teacher may have specific requirements for you course, if not,
choose "People OCDSB with the the link"
  5. At the bottom right, be sure the option is set to "CAN VIEW" (NOT "Can Edit") - This is important!

Step Five - SHARE your portfolio with your TEACHER

  1. Click in the INVITE PEOPLE box, and ACCURATELY type in the school email address for your teacher (try typing their first and last name)
  2. Choose "Is Owner" - don't worry - you are still in charge of your portfolio, but this allows your teacher to check your settings and correct things if need be.
  3. UN-check "Notify People via email"
  4. Click OK - and again OK when warned about skipping the notification - and AGAIN OK if it warns you about sharing outside your organization

You can now leave the "Manage Site" screen by clicking the link at the top left of your screen - it's just underneath the MANAGE SITE title, and it takes you back to YOUR PORTFOLIO

Step Six- FILL IN THE URL FORM

( - or - check with your teacher to see how they want you to share the URL with them)
  1. Back on your MAIN portfolio page - Look for the form "Portfolio URL" form on the front of your website (if it doesn't work, go back to the gallery and look for the "URL REg Form" link at the top left and use it instead)
  2. Read the instructions and fill in the blanks appropriately
  3. Uncheck the "Send me a copy of my responses" option
  4. Click SUBMIT

That's IT - Once your teacher finds your page, your portfolio website will appear on your class Google SITES page.
You DON'T need to repeat these steps unless you need to start again from scratch.
