After you've worked with Anim8or for a while, you learn some things that make the job a WHOLE lot easier if only you'd known it earlier. These are the COMMANDMENTS of efficent and effective Anim8or use!

  1. Keep your POLYCOUNT LOW
    1. Don't add more detail than will show up on the screen
    2. Adjust "segments" of primitives so you don't create more layers than you need
    3. Adjust "latitude" and "longitude" to control the polycount of spheres and cylinders

  1. NAME Your Materials, Objects and Scenes
    1. Use appropriate and unique names so that you can later copy and paste objects without fear of "mutating" colours or causing conflicts

  • Be sure ALL movies are in 30 frames per second
  • To speed up the Interface:
    • Use VIEW - PREFERENCES and turn off the TEXTURE display while editing
    • Double click a complex SUBDIVIDED OBJECT and change it's WORKING subdivisions to 0

  • To speed up rendering:
    • Keep the Polycount as LOW as is necessary
    • Don't generate SHADOWS from more than one light at a timeFor DRAFT animations
    • Render only ALIASED avi's - it's 10x faster than Antialiased, and is "good enough" to show you where to refine your work

  • For your FINAL animations
    • Render using ANTIALIASED
    • Render OVERNIGHT when possible
    • Use the XVID codec rather than cinepak or divx - compression tests show it to be the best choice
