Create a convincing "Composite" image using assets you've created, and edited using Photoshop

SPECIFICALLY - Create a digital photo of YOU with your Anim8or Flying Saucer model appearing at life size
  • Take a good quality background digital photo in a HIGH RESOLUTION
  • Arrange a scene in Anim8or that matches the lighting and angle
  • Create a greenscreened JPG of your Anim8or model
  • Composite the two sources in Photoshop
  • Save the results as a final JPG for submission

Here's a demo of the ENTIRE process

  1. TAKE THE BACKGROUND PICTURE - be sure your camera is set to it's LARGEST resolution (>3400x2200) for poster printing!
    1. Scout around the school and choose your best location. Compose a shot that will clearly include YOU in the pic. Use the tripod and a partner to frame and take the pic
    2. Compose the shot to provide appropriate depth cues - A surface to recieve shadows, foreground objects, reflections, an obvious light source
    3. Crop/compose the photo to exactly 3400px x 2200px

    1. Build your Saucer into your scene
    2. Go to SETTINGS and set the ENVIRONMENT background picture as the IMAGE you took for the background - you can see it when in the CAMERA view
    3. Go to SETTINGS and set the MOVIE IMAGE dimensions to match your background image (set a custom Aspect Ratio of 17 x 11, and enter 3400 for the width at the top)
    4. Build your Saucer and an INFINITE LIGHT into your scene
    5. Move the Saucer and Lighting to match well with your background image
  3. When ready set the ENVIRONMENT to SOLID green colour instead of the image
    1. Make sure you're in the CAMERA VIEW [1] and use the RENDER dropdown command
    2. Set the image WIDTH and HEIGHT to precisely match your background photo's size
    3. Turn ANTIALIASED on and click OK

    1. Load your BACKGROUND and SAUCER images into Photoshop Elements
    2. Properly select the Saucer and use the MOVE TOOL to drag it onto your background
    3. Defringe the saucer, and create a NON-DESTRUCTIVE shadow

    1. In PHOTOSHOP, create a NEW BLANK FILE that is either 17"x11" (for landscape) or 11"x17" (for portrait) @ 200DPI
    2. Open your Saucer Photo PSD and use FILE > DUPLICATE and toggle FLATTEN LAYERS IN NEW FILE to create a "flat" duplicate of your image
    3. Use the MOVE tool to drag the image onto your poster window
    4. Adjust the size of the image if necessary to fill the 11x17 frame
    5. "Save for web" using a "Very High" setting and save it to your MY DOCUMENTS. Drag that file to the appropriate HANDINS folder for submission.

Level4 - Exemplary
Level3 - Competent
Level2 - Passable
Level1 - Poor
The shot is especially well composed, clearly demonstrates BLT & F, the student, and cleverly includes elements to provide depth cues
The shot is well composed, clearly demonstrates BLT & F, the student, and includes sufficient elements to provide depth cues
The shot is sufficiently composed to complete the project, but would benefit from greater care and BLT & F skill
The shot is poorly composed, and demonstrates little skill
Anim8or Scene
The model's angle, lighting, shadows and framing matches the background photo exceptionally well. The scene has been set up in a particularly skillful way
The model's angle, lighting and framing generally match the background photo well enough to sell the illustion
The model's angle, lighting and framing has been set up to provide a fair match for the background photo
Little effort of skill is evident in the setup of the scene to make it match the backgroung photo
The Saucer has been very convincingly blended in, with particularly effective photoshop depth cues like reflections and shadows to sell the illusion
The Saucer has been blended in cleanly, with appropriate depth cues and shadows to sell the illusion
The Saucer has been blended in, with only few flaws that might betray the illusion. Greater care or skill would yield a more convincing product.
The Saucer has been blended in poorly; compromises with the fringe or depth cues yield an unconvincing illusion
Technical Quality
The image resolutions and aspect ratios of both the source files, and the final output are sized correctly. The overall result appears like a professionally composed poster.
The image is sized appropriately with sufficient quality to be printed at poster size
The image has a few flaws, including resolution and aspect ratio issues that may compromise it's eligability to be printed at poster size
The image has considerable flaws that compromise it's eligability to be printed at poster size
